When HaiSea Marine was still a dream, Seaspan promised the Haisla Nation that we would design and build the greenest tugboat fleet in the world to protect their waters, that we would create job opportunities for Haisla Nation members, and that we would build our assets and culture to be diverse and inclusive.
That dream became a joint venture partnership between Haisla Nation and Seaspan. Today, the greenest tugboat fleet in the world is together in North Vancouver, and later this year will make its final journey up the Douglas Channel to Kitimat to support the safe passage of LNG carriers to and from LNG Canada’s export facility.
HaiSea’s fleet is made up of three electric harbour tugs: the HaiSea Wamis, Wee’git and Brave and 100% of their harbour operations will be performed on rechargeable battery power. And two powerful dual fuel escort tugs: the HaiSea Kermode and Warrior – the West Coast of Canada’s most powerful escort tugs.
To celebrate the arrival of the final tugboat, the HaiSea Warrior, the full fleet recently sailed through the Vancouver Harbour, Deep Cove, and up Indian Arm to test out various formations, and put on a show for local kayakers, paddlers, and boaters. The unanimous crew favourite formation was naturally the “flying V.”
